Interview with Tim Kern w/ Video!
This video is also available in HD!
(like it really matters =)
This is a video of an interview I did with Tim Kern of Tribulation Tattoo NYC during the Milan Tattoo Convention Feb. '09. You can always count on friends to be you guinea pigs. This was my first interview in person of any kind, so bare with me on the the little things. I've learned a few lessons here =).
Here is the transcription of the interview. This took waaaaay more time that I thought it would!
(Intro)
Adam: Your head's in the way.
Tim: Is it? Yeah, no shit. Welcome to the story of my life.
Adam: What were you going to say?
Tim: Is this for the interview?
Adam: I don't know what I'm going to do with any of this actually. I'll probably use it for the interview.
Tim: It's pretty funny. We kept getting sidetracked during the interview. I kept saying things that had to be edited out later because no one needed to hear it...(cut)...now you're going to have to edit that out too god dammit.
Adam: His camera is way better than mine.
(Interview)
Adam: Ok, so, give me a brief introduction as to who you are.
Tim: Who are we anyway?
Adam: God dammit! (laughter)
Tim: Who are you? (laughter)
Adam: Dick.
Tim: Who are you to ask me? Um. I'm Tim (Tim Kern). I'm a tattoo artist, otherwise you probably wouldn't be bothering me about this bullshit.
Adam: Nope. Probably not.
Tim: I'm also sharing a hotel room with him (Adam), so he's making me do this.
Adam: Yes I am.
Tim: I work in New York. I've been tattooing for about 13 years. That's the basics.
Adam: Where did you come from, originally, before New York.
Tim: My mother's vagina.
Adam: As opposed to your fathers vagina?
Tim: As opposed to someone else's mother's vagina?
Adam: Fair enough I guess.
Tim: Well, I guess it would also be my brother's mother's vagina.
Adam: That's just disturbing.
Tim: (laughter)
Adam: Giant heads, twice, coming out of your mom's vagina.
Tim: It happened.
Adam: It's kind of disturbing.
Tim: Well, we were smaller then. We were 4 pounds each.
Adam: Was your head smaller?
Tim: Yes, but still disproportionately large.
(cut)
Adam: Why did you choose to go into tattooing? Why did you choose that as your path?
Tim: Well, speaking of meth addicts...I was not one.
Adam: That's good.
Tim: But I had to deal with a bunch on a regular basis, because I was running a day center for homeless people.
Adam: Seriously?
Tim: Yeah, I mean, basically I got paid minimum wage to sit in a place and keep it open so that they could go someplace warm when it was cold out. And, I had some friends that were tattoo artists you liked my artwork and they encouraged me to learn. My brother was already tattooing out of his house, like learning on his own for a few months before that. I was like, I don't have anything better to do, and if I can make money making art, which is awesome, I think I'll give it a shot.
Adam: How long did you have to apprentice for?
Tim: I apprenticed for three years, and I didn't tattoo for the first year of that. And in my first year, I did about eight.
Adam: Who were your first eight people? Did you k
