    Posted: November/20/2011 at 2:45am

Hello all.

I'm considering getting my septum pierced but I'm wondering where exactly do they pierce it...through the little fleshy area or the hard cartilage?

Also, any words of wisdom/horror stories on the matter?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

If pierced properly it should be pierced in the "sweet spot" between the cartilage and fleshy part. When I got mine done the piercing itself didn't hurt at all but the soreness following was pretty bad, you have to be extremely careful not to bump your nose on accident cuz it feels similar to being punched. Also if you don't keep it clean the crust that builds during healing can cut the inside of the piercing and that is horribly painful. But for sure get it done, its my favorite piercing and I've loved it since the day I got it done.

For a septum piercing to be done properly it doesn't need to be pierced in the "sweet spot." When my septum was pierced it was pierced with an 8g needle and jewelry. Because of the size I had mine done in the cartilage.

For horror stories it can suck if you have a deviated septum. I have a deviated septum. My septum was pierced at 8g but it wasn't straight so I took it out and repierced it 2 weeks later. It really sucks if you get a crusty inside your septum. That happened to me and if I barely touched my nose I would feel a sharp pain. I ended up taking out the jewelry, cleaning the inside of the piercing, and putting the jewelry back in.

My septum was pierced at 6g. Easiest piercing I've ever had. Tenderness after was horrible, but it's a 0 now with no problems

Yes, I'm not worried about pain per se, I have had other things pierced. Just curious about other people's complications and such with that specific piercing.

Thanks!!

Realistically speaking, there aren't a lot of complications you'll come across.

It might be pierced crookedly, or you might have difficulty finding jewelry that fits comfortably, for example. At the very worst, you might get a cold/hay fever whilst it is still healing. Or the aforementioned crusties.
