I've seen pictures of it freshly done but none healed. Does it turn out or does it just stretch it. I have a finger nail that wont fully grow back. I have thought about it a lot. Its on my right side (my unmodded side) and it would be like an easter egg for my body. I was thinking simple like a =) face. Yes, no, just do it so we know what happens?

I'm pretty sure that kind of spot just has a hard time holding ink. if you have a nail that doesn't grow in the area, the tissue may be different. It would be best to talk to a tattoo artist about it.

Ya the skin there is different now, its hard and dry, unless I let the nail grow over it. Then it's like when you keep a band aid on for to long and it gets soft and shit. I was thinking just trying it and see what happens but I know it will hurt like hell. It seems like the ink would be pulled along with the nail as it grew if the nail were attached like it should be, but with the nail hovering over the skin I'm not sure. I might try looking around some more and maybe ask some artist around here. Just thought maybe someone on here knew some thing about it or knows of some article.

I know of quite a few articles, actually.
Here's one that was featured on BME a few years ago:http://news.bmezine.com/2008/04/07/yowch-under-the-fingernail-tattoo/ Here's one that Shannon Larratt mentioned on his blog: http://www.zentastic.com/blog/2011/02/11/friday-sillyness-666-fingernail-bed-tattoo/ Here's a BME article with super fun pictures of Allen Falkner's under the nail tattoo: http://news.bmezine.com/2010/10/06/you-know-something-is-painful-when/ And here's a before and after picture of the same tattoo: http://www.zentastic.com/blog/2011/02/11/allens-fingernail-bed-tattoo-fresh-and-healed/ That's all I've got on the topic. Good luck if you try and go for it! |

That last one helps me make my choice. I'm going to do it. My nail doesn't actually connect to the skin so I think it will last better than that. I might do it this weekend and when ever I do I'll post pictures of results.

So I clipped the nail down and found it grew back a little more. I had to cut it away from the skin a bit. Then took a diamond tip bit and ground it down smooth. I'm going to let it heal up a bit tonight and go for it tomorrow. Any advise to reduce the pain?

my bf tried to file down his nail so it was soft enough to tattoo over- the nail fell off and his tattooist refused to tattoo it. he's pretty jealous right now:P |

i guess the whole trouble with his though, that the nail was likely to grow back and the tattoo either grow out, stretch or not heal properly... don't think he'd want his nail to not grow back though being a tradie haha |
