hi, I got my cheeks pierced a couple of months ago now i think, they were fine, until about 5days ago. I have a lump growing infront of my left piercing. It feels like it's got puss in and it does weep, but it's mostly hard. I took some photos of both. My right one is fine, I have an 18mm barbell in it. I've put a 22mm back in the manky one.
Anyone know what it is from the pic? And more importantly, what to do??

Yup, cheek piercings are notorious for various problems even after they heal. One of the best thing you can do now is to alternate hot and cold compresses repeatedly until they subside. The bump could be early signs of abcesses, cysts and fluid build-up. In any case, the hot and cold compresses will increase the circulation, calm the area and feel good at the same time.
Get your warmth through dry heat on the outside, such as a hot sponge sealed inside a plastic bag for 10-15 mins at a go, and a tissue or gauze in between you and the bag to keep it from getting sweaty. Same goes for cold compress, using an icebag and hold it against your cheek for 10-15 mins or so...

If it's indeed an abscess, a piercing jewelry should be presented for drainage. Keep up with the sea salt soak and hot/cold compresses, and the lump should eventually go away (maybe take up to one or two months so be patient) ..
However, if you experience pain, dark green/brown pus and hot to the touch, you might need to go see a doctor for prescribed antibiotic (but even if the doctor tell you to, do not take your jewelry out until the infection is clear)
If it's a cyst, here are some identifications: slow-growing, painless, smooth to the touch when they are rolled under the skin. Cysts usually do not cause pain unless they rupture or become infected or inflamed. However, most of them will disappear on their own without treatment...
Also, check your routine on your left side, do you sleep on your left side in an unclean sleeping surface (if so, it would catch bacteria through pillowcases)? Maybe you rest your left cheek on your left wrist unconsciously? Etc... Beware all of those and baby it up a little ...:-) Good luck!
One more thing, when you replaced the 18mm bar with the 22mm, was it sterilized? Putting an unsterilized jewelry in an already-troublesome piercing might not be the best action.. ------------- |

A customer came to me with a problem similar to this. She tried everything from hot/cold compress and sea salt soaks. She came back and it didn't get any better. it was to the point where she didnt want it anymore but I assured her not to remove the jewelry until it went away. So what we did is use 16g teflon (it was a 14g tongue barbell) with larger balls and it healed a week later. I came to a conclusion that it was pierced at an akward angle and it was causing a lot of stress on the piercing. We probably could have saved it and put the 14g back in but she really didnt want it anymore. |

thanks for the help, it's really appreciated, I'll keep up the soaks and the compresses. It was a freshly autoclaved batch of jewellery, so it was definately sterile. It sounds more like an abcess than a cyst I think, as it doesn't move under the skin.

Woke up this morning and it had doubled in size and had become sore so I went to the doctors. She told me to take it out and gave me some antibiotics (to prevent any further infection). Anyway, it was doing my head in ciz I could feel the pressure on it so I stuck a strerilised piercing needle in it and drained it myself. Much better =] I'm gonna carry on the sws
Granted, I've lost the piercing now but I'd rather wait til it clears up and get it re-done. -------------

from what i can see they were pierced to far back. there are a lot of things to look out for when piercing cheeks. saliva ducks and veins, nerves and so on. one side may be clear to pierce while they other may not. so it is imperative to check both sides after marking and make sure the path is as clear as possible. and adjust marks as needed. they tend to not heal but get comfy and can flair up in no time. don't get me wrong, they can heal but. i have had mine for 6 years and on occasion they will get a little pissy. ------------- pierce thy neighbor |

I have one natural dimple so we just just lined them up evenly and checked for the usual veins etc. I'm pretty gutted I've lost them (took the other out cuz i got paranoid it'd happen with that one too!) but I've now got two quite deep dimples so I'm happy :)
